New resources: Social Welfare Law in Wales

As many readers will know, Welsh Government has devolved powers to make social care legislation.  Welsh social care law therefore differs from English social care law.  However, most publications on social care law in the UK are focused solely on English law and don’t cover Welsh law, which is frustrating for social care users, advocates, lawyers, practitioners and lecturers teaching on social care law courses in Wales (ahem).

Fortunately, my wonderful colleagues have come to the rescue in the form of freely available online resources.  My colleague at Cardiff University, Dr Julie Doughty, runs the Children’s Social Care Law in Wales website.  And now Luke Clements, Professor of Law and Social Justice at Leeds Law School, together with Ann James – a retired social worker and social work academic – have set up a new website on adult social care law.  The website is called Rhydian: Social Welfare Law in Wales, and it is named after Rhydian Fon James, an academic who wrote and campaigned on environmental and disability justice, who sadly died last year.

The Rhydian website includes an online journal, ‘a platform for ‘critical commentary’ on social welfare law in Wales.’  It is also an informative and accessible resource for those seeking information about the law.

Please share links to these websites widely with anyone interested in social care law in Wales.
